Love is a Wild Dog

Last night, at 12:30 am, when I was letting my dog out to go to the bathroom in my backyard, she ran away. My surroundings are a small town in the mountains, with no street lights or sidewalks. There is a large hill, a small mountain, that our unfenced backyard pours into, and up that hill she ran at full speed. Why, I don't know. She had run away, over the mountain, once before, and that night had been conjured out of a nightmare. Finding her had been like finding a needle in a haystack. It ended when after 45 minutes of clawing at the rough and hilly earth in the dark, screaming her name, much like a dog myself, I sat down to cry, convinced I wouldn't find her. At that moment, she tumbled down the mountain, barking anxiously, into my arms.

This time was the same. It had been raining, so the moon was hidden by a dark haze. There were no streetlights, my dog is very dark, the color of night, save for white markings on her head and chest. My dog isn't very loud, she rarely barks. When she moves, she is agile and dainty, and doesn't make noisy food prints. I could hear her tags jingling, and so I, barefoot and in pajamas, ran up the mountain in the dark as fast as I could. Scanning the landscape below me, I was once again convinced I would not find her. We hadn't lived here long enough, hadn't gone on enough neighborhood walks for her, or I, to be familiar with the area. After a few minutes, she surfaced in the driveway of a home, lit up by the house's exterior light. I tumbled down the mountain on my behind and was on her before she could bolt away again. There was no anger inside of me as we walked on the roads to lead up to my home, even though my feet were bruised and kept collecting rocks and glass, I was cold, wet, and covered in dirt. My dog, a rescue, has her limits. She never comes when called outside. She doesn't understand that running away will culminate in a loss of a bed, toys, food, and walks. I know her limits and I accept that I am her caretaker, the caretaker of the good behaviors and the bad, and those limits are what make her the animal she is. When we got inside my house and I dried her feet off, she was shaking. She was scared; those few moments of the exhilaration of running full-force and adventure coalesced into the fear of not knowing where she was. She could also probably sense my fear and that probably did not help her confusion.

I recently lost a love. I am 30 years old and thought I had found "the one". How silly. Even my cognitive brain knows that there is no "one". There is only timing, coincidence, enjoyment, and mutual determination. No matter, this time it was love sent down from the cosmos. We would be one another's everything. And so everything was framed in relation to her, or should I say, to my desire, my happiness and expectations. Like my Juliet, she was the sun, the east, the west. There was all that energy coursing out of me like a black hole, with none of the awareness of the limits. The limits of space, time, and mutual determination. I thought my determination and my total knowing that this was it could be enough for both of us. How silly. You can't climb a mountain that doesn't want to be climbed. You can't find a dog that doesn't want to be found.

I had forgotten that love is a wild dog. Sometimes it is there, and sometimes it runs away. Sometimes it runs away because it is afraid, or sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to the fleeing pattern. To try to run after it full force in the hopes of sliding your fingers under its collar in the dark night to drag it home is futile. There are limits, even to a love that courses through your body and heart like an electric shock, uncontrollable, which is what this love had done to me.

But now I remember, and I cannot forget. There is timing and there is space and there are limits. What I shared with my lost love doesn't go away, though it will never come back, quite the same way for me, in my life. What remains is the reminder of who we are and what we can't control, nor should we ever want to. The opening of a heart, the feeling of hope. The comfort and familiarity in a voice, in someone's hands and eyes. The fracturing, the fear that so often is the flip side of intimacy, and the walls erected, like a labrynth made out of dark, cold stone, that signal the inevitable end. I look at my wild dog laying at my feet, made up of licks and nuzzling and silky fur, and whining and dirt and shitting and I thank her, for letting me find her in the dark, and letting me continue to enjoy her, and care for her, for as long or as short our time together will last.

so i've been in grad school for two and a half months now, the details and specifics i will not go into right here, but all of these core questions and thoughts and ideas keep popping up. and honestly, it is mostly the concerns of youth culture. Specifically, the concerns when I was a youth. I am now 30. the point is, i find myself revisiting thoughts and looking at images and listening to music i was obsessed with from that time. sonic youth, the minutemen, crass, bad brains, babes in toyland, the haggard, rita ackermann, bikini kill, james baldwin, judith butler, lacan, fanon, kiki smith, patti smith, the list could go on for pages. A lot of these bands were punk. They analyzed class and gender and colonialism in a way that made sense, they expressed howls of vivid discontent, or at the very least, illustrated the social narratives that were going on around them... What I am trying to say is, I am still punk, but I think somewhere along the way, I forgot. Got too concerned with, like, supporting myself after college and paying off my student loans. It is really strange that it is grad school to bring this all back up in me. However, it makes sense, as I am, for the first time, not 100% worried about money (living off student loans, not very poshly but its quite a wonderful and privileged life to not have to work at the moment. I mean, I want to start to play the guitar again, so I can start a punk band, and I haven't touched a guitar in maybe 2 or more years! There's more, this isn't so coherent at the moment.....stay tuned. Here is an amazing cover by the amazing band I am excited about, Anika.

The last Art Party happened at TBA, all photos are by Wayne Bund, I believe.I want to thank Jenny, Raijah, Tuesday, Kjerstin, Bronze, Mike, Seth, Katharine, Kirstan, Light Asylum, Kaitlin, Dexter, Timmy, Hannah, Oliver, Jess, Derek, Alaistar, and everyone who came. I DON'T want to thank the horrible sound guy. Seriously, I can't believe that PICA, who is comprised of amazing human beings and volunteers, and who is one the my FAVORITE arts organizations on the planet, could rehire some guy who doesn't know how to EQ. This was seriously one of the worst performances I have given in my life, and it was because I simply could not hear on stage, something that almost anyone could have solved. The same shit happened last year when Seth and I DJ'ed Gang Gang Dance. Down with bad sound and badder sound guy attitudes/subtle misogyny/homo-phobia. But, all said, it was nice to go out with friends all around, and it reminded me of why Jenny and I did Art Party, and how everyone, everytime, totally brought it, whether through performance, art, music, fashion, installation, etc. Portland artists, you are incredible. Jenny Hoyston, you are a genius and I am happy to know you are in the world. Let's figure out a way to get some money up in this piece, though, FA REAL.
So now I'm in graphic design grad school in California, so my postings will probably be less frequent, who knows. Happy times all around, I'm so blessed and lucky and inspired.

Over the course of the last few months, Gottesdiener asked four other artists to give her instructions for living. Each time, she took their advice for the duration of one week, and then made art from the ideas their directions had inspired. This process culminated with a ritual involving all parties and designed to charge their creative energy.

The work presented here, which includes photographs, paintings, silkscreens, and books published by Publication Studio, intends to be a celebration of collaboration, inspiration, friendship, and the energy of action and living.

Sarah Gottesdiener is an artist and musician from Hartford, CT, now living in Portland, OR. Primarily a painter, her practice also includes fashion design, sculpture, print making, curating, writing, party throwing, installation, music, and graphic design. Her visual work has been shown extensively in Portland, as well as in San Francisco, New York, Miami, Amsterdam, and Canada. With remarkable co-organizer Jenny Hoyston, she throws the art happening Art Party at Branx every month. Gottesdiener also plays percussion and sings in the bands Matrimony and Atole. This exhibit will be her last in Portland for a while as she will be attending CalArts to obtain her masters of graphic design this fall.

My brother Seth and I are starting a new listening night at Sloans Tavern. It is called Luna Lunes and we will only be playing songs with women's voices in them. Think Siouxsie, Debbie, Patti,Joan (s), The Knife, Nite Jewell, Desire, Cece Peniston, Mariah, Yo Majesty, JJ, Dawn Penn, Micachu, PJ, Enya, The Breeders, Laurie Anderson, old Hole,etc. etc....there is so much out there to play and hear!

We hope you can join us for the first installment, this Monday, May 3rd, from 8-12. It is FREE. Sloan's has wine, beer, liquor, soda, food, and perhaps the most amazing decor of any barthis side of the rockies. Sloan's Tavern is located at 36 N Russell Street.

(I am going to tell you why I continue to organize these sorts of feminist and/or creative events and things, for little or no money, and for no tangible or capitalistic sort of reward. It is because a couple of years ago I became hell-bent on creating my own reality. This took the form of events, projects, musics, words, and art that celebrate and explore many things, namely community, love, trust, feminism, art history, personal narratives, alternative realities, metaphysics, and more.

If there was something I wanted to see happen, that I did not see going on in my immediate reality, I attempted to create it, usually with other awesome people involved. (no one is an island) This is how Art Party came about, with the incredible Jenny Hoyston. This is how bands came about, with collaborations from talented genius musicians such as Haley Weiner, Timmy Straw, Sarah Dougher, Jenstar, sts, and Radio Sloan. This is how art shows came about, with the help of awesome curators and friends May from Stumptown/Nationale, and Emily Baker/Sword and Fern, and my muses and collaborators Seth Gottesdiener, Kaetlin Kennedy, Dexter Flowers, Katerina Llanes, and others.

Other friends/musicians/artists that I adore and love and that are so supportive, nurturing, all around helpful as inspirations and individuals creating their own bodies of work have included my mom, Steve Gevurtz, Susan Ploetz, Lacy Davis, Lake Perriguey, Jackie Davis, Mike McGonigal, Jen Kovach, Helen Reed, Hannah Miami, Leilani Rosa, Philip Iosca, Matthew Stadler, JP Jenkins, Billy Von Raven, Nikki Browning, Sini A, Wes Younie, Michelle Calvert, Billy Von Raven, Sharon Inahara, Manny Reyes/Tim Ferrell/Atole guys, Aaron Montaigue + Laura Johnson, Josh Berger and Tiffany Lee Brown, Cubby Berk, Shakir Najib, Casey Minitrea, Jen Oleson, Kathleen Keogh, Jeremy Pelley, and many many others. I have a lot of respect for these individuals and for their brilliant talents and projects. They are also really quality human beings doing the best they can in a world where being so kind, earnest, and sweet is not always immediately rewarded.

This is a very empowering thing to do, I feel, to love and create external projects and moments with love and hope. Nothing ever works out how you plan in life, even events or projects that you are at the helm of. It doesn't always or hardly ever look how you wished it would. But you don't have the right to complain if you aren't doing anything about your desires for equality and creative freedom, and the more I do, the less I find myself complaining.

We're all so blessed and so lucky.

My commentary is this: Uncle Jenny's Psyche Ward Ruled, Julia Blackburn/Dust's display was beautiful, Emily Baker's/Sword and Fern installation was killer, Ms. Renee the Tarot Reader gave a line of people readings, there was so much more that I didn't photograph. Atole, STLS, queer jerkin', and a fashion show I was in that the lovely and talented Chelsea Starr created. My excuse is that I flew in from LA that morning at 9 (7 am flight) and that I was totally fried. I promise to take pictures consistently from here on out! Come to Branx next Friday, April 2nd, for fun arty times.

Ideas for Future Whitney Biennials

So this year the Whitney Biennal was really underwhelming. Here's my response.

Ideas for future Biennals

-Gather up a group of arbitrary artists. Maybe 3 or 4 teams of 10 or so working in different disciplines--film, video, dance, painting, fashion. They must work as a team to create awesome work in one floor of the Whitney. This can be done however they choose. RuPaul, Tyra, Oprah, and Ellen DeGeneres are the judges. Winning teams get a lifetime supply of tampons, which should be free anyway and made available to all visitors, In fact, can the next Biennal just be sponsored by Gladrags and Kotex?

-Create one or two themes! I saw really none this year--other than the requisite throwbacks to other artists/art movements the overall presentation sludged together in a way that the stand outs were vaguely weighted down by the confusing mediocrity of the whole. I love Ellen Gallagher and Storm Tharp, but the weak showings of the other work actualy made me question their validity. And the few political works, such as the Jackson Hutchins' couch, and the portraits of the Iraq women burning themselves out of desperation seemed perfunctory. So why don't you have a theme, curators? Again pick your artists and give them a theme, an impetus to create new work. That way the viewer will be able to see how well an artist can work under limits.

-Include fashion/theatrical performances. Isn't the world in a both over the top, tragic, and horrendously beautiful state? Much of the work seemed really safe. I don't want safe in artwork. If it is going to be safe I want the techniques employed by the artists to be off the hook: something that was not present across the board in the works I observed.

-Shut down the institution of the Biennal and make the work go into the streets and take place all over the city and burroughs. Instead of having to travel to see ALL the work, some of the work will be in everyone's face all the time. If I want to see a particular artist, I might have to go to Long Island City. Then I might have to stop in a restaurant I've never been in before and buy something. Or, keep the museum open, and for the $18, people can get a mani or pedi from a starving artist who has an MFA. Conversations between artist and visitor can be recoreded and uploaded onto the Whitney's website. Artists these days are still so hungry for exposure I'm sure they'd do it for free, Whitney, so exploit away.

-Select the artists, then hire private investigators to find out the following:

Was the artist the first in their family to go to school?
If so, do they have student loans? Who is paying those student loans?
What kinds of jobs, besides "artist" has the artist had?
Was being an artist encouraged by the artist's parents?
What nationality, gender expression, age, socio-economic status is the artist?
Did the artist have to fuck anyone to get a "break"?
If so, who and for how long a time period?
Can the artist afford to have an assistant?
What is the artit's annual income?
Does the artist get $$ to be in the Biennal?

It's been a busy month so far! And so much to do before it ends.
What I did so far:
Finish a song with Timmy, our first one, for our band, called Matrimony. I am beyond excited to work with Timmy Straw, a bonafide musical genius. Just you wait--you'll be hearing more of her now that her album is going to be released. Oh, yeah, I did the album layout for that too. here's a sneak peek:

I made a sick (if I say so myself) poster for the March Art Party. (it deserves a separate post.)
I dj'ed a bunch so far. A very enjoyable love affair that I cherished very much came to an end on Valentine's Day, appropriately enough. Never fear, my true Valentine was an awesome one-shoulder Alexander Wang mini that I scored for $45 on sale. (!!!)
My work was auctioned off (tonight) in New York, to benefit the Silvia Rivera Law Project. It's really nice to be included among such kick ass artists like K8 Hardy and Phranc.It's also really amazing that the SRLP exists to fight for the rights of all lovely humans, especially the super heroes of the world, the true brave heros, transgendered humans and two spirits.
Dexter Flowers and I had our zine release party at In Other Words. It was truly a grand night, filled with love, warmth, and talent from the likes of Hope Hitchcock, Wayne Gregory, and my personal favorite PDX writer, Carrot Quinn. We sold out of our zines! This will also garner it's own blog entry; it deserves as such. The artwork of Ms. Flowers and myself is truly divine, and the covers are shiny silver cardstock!
I had a very important friendship reunion.It is worth it to talk it out. Always.
And also, so far, this month, I found out I am interviewing at YALE and CALARTs for consideration into their MFA Graphic Design Programs. WOWZERZZZ! what a month so far! And I'm not even telling you everything as this entry is too long already.There is still so much to do in this month. February you are so beautiful.

For one ink-splattered day, PICA will gather a cross-section of Portland's most talked-about artists and arm them with coffee and printing presses. Visit our makeshift studio and collect the results of their monoprinting mania: build a personal art collection with work from Portland’s vibrant artist community.

Originally conceived by artist Stephen Hayes, the 7th Annual Prints for PICA moves to a storefront location in the Pearl District for a day-long printing blitz, followed by a one-week holiday pop-up shop. Ranging in price from $100-$250, prints are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. All proceeds to benefit PICA’s Artistic Programming.

Kick-off sale will run on December 12, from 6-9 pm - before the ink has even had a chance to dry.

Hi friends!
I'm very excited to let you know about a new party that Jenny Hoyston and myself are planning, called ART PARTY. It is going to take place every First Friday, at Branx after all the gallery shows on the Eastside close their openings. It is designed to be a place where artists, musicians, and enthusiasts can go, hang out, and get their minds blown open by more art/music/happenings.

I had been getting really bored of just going to just dance nights with DJs playing all the same music, and going to shows with like 4 or 5 bands and nothing else, or just going to stiff art openings where no one knows what to do except double-fist free wine and not talk about the art on the wall...so we decided to combine all of this into one action-packed night. We're going have one band/music act, 2-3 DJs, 2-3 artists, and other surprise art actions like guerrilla fashion shows or dance troupes. This shit is not going to be stuffy OR boring.

We are building out a cove/installation nook/chill out space where you can make an installation! We will have wall space and equipment for you to hang art, project videos, and do sock puppet shows (etc.)! We have a stage/dance floor where you can create anything you possibly desire. This would also be a good place for you to try something new, that you've wanted to try. A side project that's been lurking on your four-track. An idea for an installation involving feathers and paper mache that's been eating at your brain.
I would like super talented, amazing, special, creative genius, mind-blowing friends and others to be part of this. If you are an artist, musician, writer, sculptor, publisher, floor dancer, fashion designer, make up artist, junk collector, dj, mime, dancer, band member, etc etc and would like to be involved, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

On this blog. I talk with my mouth enough in real life. The pictures here, for the most part, speak enough for my life and work. I don't fancy myself a writer, though it is all I wanted to be when I was a little child. But...this month was kind of wacky. A lot of things happened. Tube tops were made. Fantasy Quest choral pieces where sung. I discovered an ex-date's blog entries mostly still concerned me. Calendula-infused oils were created. Moon-unit band pieces were composed and recorded. Surprise Parties were organized and thrown. Vows were made. Discipline ramped up. An ex-love propositioned me after almost 2 years of love lost. Books were published. I saw Peaches walk on a sea of hands. My art was censored. For including an icon of a Yoruba deity on it, one I've been praying to and one that meant a lot to me. I did a lot of research about cultural appropriation in school. There's been a lot said and a lot read. It's something I think about often and something that can at times be a slippery fish in one's greasy hands. The different spiritual practices I subscribe to and ascribe to, while may be called into question because they are not in my genetics, or in my childhood upbringing, are tended to with care and reverence. The imagery that I derive inspiration from in my art comes from a myriad of sources, all of them researched and sampled/referenced for a reason. Putting one's self out there as an artist, means one may get criticized. But I never expected to get called a racist, or subtly accused of ignorance, for including imagery from other cultures and sources other than an American/white/Jewish one, whatever any of those mean any way. What do you think? When and where does our art cross the line? How do we exploit? Where do lines get drawn? What am I "allowed" to represent in my art and "who" decides the laws anyway? Why is policing still the standard practice, of the day?

This weekend is a cool art opening that I made a book for. The physical opening is in Amsterdam, which will be joined by a virtual opening here in Portland, at the Cleaners.Below is all the info. I feel so lucky to be included in this project/show/group.

Most of the 18 books will be at the party, and a complete set will be on display in Amsterdam, visible over Skype.

Vital details: Saturday, October 24, at 11 am at Publication Studio's HQ @ The Cleaners at Ace Hotel, 1022 SW Stark Street. Free and open to the public. Clyde Common will be serving Dutch borrel (gin) with beers back and delicious Dutch snacks. Publication Studio principals Patricia No and Matthew Stadler will be in attendance (Matthew via Skype from Amsterdam) together with many of the participating artists. This was really fun. I got asked to design two swimwear looks for a fashion show sponsored by the Portland Mercury.Connie, Kirk, and the reat of the team did a great job.The suit I wore that the genius designer/artist Philip Iosca designed had a hundred pink hippos hand sewed onto a suit and felt warm and safe, like a teddy bear, to wear. The beautiful and talented Kaitlin Kennedy of Lost Lockets and my hot brother Seth modeled for me. Raja did make-up. The incredible Luxury Jones also rocked a piece. The collection that Heather Treadway showed was great too. I have never sewed or used a serger before a month ago and I have to say it was quite a challenge. But now I daydream about all the creations I want to make.Thank you

I went back home, to the East Coast, where I am from. Was trying to see if I should move back there, was open to some kind of sign. I spent 3 days in upstate NY, and 3 days in NYC, here, painting room 817 in a pretty rad art jam. I fell off a ladder and really hurt myself. And was reminded of how small, and expensive, and in some ways the same as Portland New York is. Then I went to CT for a week. And a tornado came into my back yard and felled a 10 ton tree that fell on my childhood home while my mother and I were inside.We were on the news but couldn't see the news because we didn't have power.My childhood best friend had a beautiful baby.Seeing my awesome family was the best.We are so lucky everyone is happy and healthy.Lots of things happened to me while I was there this time that are changing me into a different person. I'm coming back to Portland jobless, physically banged up, almost 29, and definitely more than a little confused, but very hopeful.
