New Years Present

If anyone wants to buy me a gift, you know, just for being me, I'd like this portrait of myself that a nice artist painted for me for Nationale's one year anniversary show.Feeling pretty good, sitting at the Red e taking a break from grad school portfolio lay-outs. Will be done with all in 5 days, woo hoo. Feminist Art T-shirts sent to NYC, Spain, Germany. For some reason, it's the foreigners who are still feminists? C'mon Americans/Canadians, catch the spirit and order a shirt.

More Shirts! Now I have an Etsy Store!

Phew, shirts! Lei and I were printing maniacs earlier today.
A soundtrack of reggae and some general ranting was our impetus.So many shirts!
You can click here to buy officially, or email me at sarah.gottesdiener@gmail.com to see what I have available...I got tired after listing 10, but I have about 25 of all sizes, and colors...Last batch sold out in 2 weeks so get them while they are hot.

Thanks to Leilani Rosa for helping me screen print over tears and mimosas, and for just general bad-ass friendship, and Steve, Mari, and Nick for being my models and friends.

PRINTS FOR PICA TOMORROW!!!!!

YES! MY favorite December art event is tomorrow. I'm taking part. my monoprints will involve googly eyes and glitter, that's all i know for sure...

* PICA Shoppe Storefront
* 539 NW 10th Ave
* Portland OR 97209, Map
* 503-242-1419
* Capacity: 250
* Free Admission
* All Ages

* Sat . Dec 12 . 6-9 pm

For one ink-splattered day, PICA will gather a cross-section of Portland's most talked-about artists and arm them with coffee and printing presses. Visit our makeshift studio and collect the results of their monoprinting mania: build a personal art collection with work from Portland’s vibrant artist community.

Originally conceived by artist Stephen Hayes, the 7th Annual Prints for PICA moves to a storefront location in the Pearl District for a day-long printing blitz, followed by a one-week holiday pop-up shop. Ranging in price from $100-$250, prints are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. All proceeds to benefit PICA’s Artistic Programming.

Kick-off sale will run on December 12, from 6-9 pm - before the ink has even had a chance to dry.

This season, following the kick-off sale, join us for an afternoon children's printing workshop, and visit our PICA SHOPPE for artworks from TBA:09 artists, books, CDs, and PICA merchandise.

Prints for PICA is supported by Clear, Dennis Uniform, Gamblin Artists Colors, Katayama Framing, Mahaffey Fine Art, Nau, & Utrecht Art Supplies.

Artists include Abra Ancliffe, Dan Attoe, Ray Barrett, Amy Bernstien, Pat Boas, Christine Bourdette, Nathan Bowser, John Brandsberg, John Brodie, Christopher Buckingham, Wayne Bund, Peter Burr, Ben Buswell, Sidonie Caron, Clare Carpenter, Ann Carstensen, Bruce Conkle, David Corbett, Matthew Courtway, Shawn Creedon, Dennis Cunningham, Wayne Curry, Nan Curtis, Nanda Dagastino, Tim Dalbow, Dana Dart Mclean, Diedrich Dasenbrock, Luther Davis, Shelby Davis, Melia Donovan, David Eckard, Karen Esler, Jenn Feeney, Anna Fidler, Daryah Fohoodyi, Derek Franklin, Glen Galdridge, Scott Gellaty, Damien Gilley, Emily Ginsburg, Jax Gise, Daniel Glendening, Justin Gorman, Sarah Gottesdiener, Matt Green, Jef Gunn, Rob Halverson, Bryson Hansen, Stephen Hayes, Yuji Hiratsuka, Midori Hirose, Alex Hirsch, Joe Hockett, Deborah Horrell, Linda Hutchins, Marie Inocencio, Philip Iosca, Johanna Jackson, Jorg Jakoby, Chris Johansen, Marilyn Joyce, Arnold Kemp, Josh Kermitt, Sydney Kim, Yoshihiro Kitai, Jessica Klien, Cark Klimt, Tina Lange, Ruth Lantz, Chris Larson, Kendra Larson, Cynthia Lathi, Oriana Lewton Leopold, Gabriel Liston, Patrick Long, Israel Lund, Corey Lunn, Elizabeth Malaska, Ademar Matinian, Mack McFarland, Melanie McLain, Heather McLaughlin, Sarah Meadows, Montana Merida, Leslie Miller, Cris Moss, Amber Moss-Jensen, Jenene Nagy, Noah Nakell, TJ Norris, Jenevive Nykolak, Darren Orange, Justin Oswald, Bonnie Paisley, Michael Parich, Bill Park, Trude Parkinson, Rachel Pederson, Meg Peterson, Ryan Pierce, Mel Ponis, Brittany Powell, Nathaniel Price, MaryAnn Puls, Andrea Raijer, Vanessa Renwick, Kent Richardson, Rita Robillard, Patrick Rock, Catherine Rondthaler, Ben Rosenberg, Rainbow Ross, Jack Dingo Ryan, Paige Saez, Blair Saxon-Hill, Crystal Shenk, Steven Slappe, Josh Smith, Adam Sorensen, Stephanie Speight, Anya Spielman, Amy Steel, Blake Stellyes, Storm Tharp, Annette Thurston, Joe Thurston, Elise Wagner, Samantha Wall, Annie Warnock, Heather Watkins, Marie Watt, Brandon Wilkinson, Christy Wyckoff, Wesley Younie, and Renee Zangara.

ART PARTY STARTS FEB 5th 2010

Jenny and I are starting a new art night at Branx, and we need your help! Especially if you are an installation/performance/video artist.

Check it:

Hi friends!
I'm very excited to let you know about a new party that Jenny Hoyston and myself are planning, called ART PARTY. It is going to take place every First Friday, at Branx after all the gallery shows on the Eastside close their openings. It is designed to be a place where artists, musicians, and enthusiasts can go, hang out, and get their minds blown open by more art/music/happenings.

I had been getting really bored of just going to just dance nights with DJs playing all the same music, and going to shows with like 4 or 5 bands and nothing else, or just going to stiff art openings where no one knows what to do except double-fist free wine and not talk about the art on the wall...so we decided to combine all of this into one action-packed night. We're going have one band/music act, 2-3 DJs, 2-3 artists, and other surprise art actions like guerrilla fashion shows or dance troupes. This shit is not going to be stuffy OR boring.

We are building out a cove/installation nook/chill out space where you can make an installation! We will have wall space and equipment for you to hang art, project videos, and do sock puppet shows (etc.)! We have a stage/dance floor where you can create anything you possibly desire. This would also be a good place for you to try something new, that you've wanted to try. A side project that's been lurking on your four-track. An idea for an installation involving feathers and paper mache that's been eating at your brain.
I would like super talented, amazing, special, creative genius, mind-blowing friends and others to be part of this. If you are an artist, musician, writer, sculptor, publisher, floor dancer, fashion designer, make up artist, junk collector, dj, mime, dancer, band member, etc etc and would like to be involved, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

Here is the mercury's call out.

Holler at me if you are interested! xx

FUCK YES

My book Yoko and Moon, Published by Publication Studio, is now carried at one of my very favorite gallery/shops in the universe, Nationale, run by a most charming, talented, brilliant, beautiful, honest French woman by the name of May. May and I were introduced when she curated my work for a show at Stumptown, and I am so lucky to know her. She is truly an inspiration and true gem. Go to her store, buy some of her amazing items, such as soap shipped right from France, wonderfully curated/arranged books, or stellar art. (or my book, he he.) Also, Nationale is having a show for their first birthday, the opening is December 11th, from 6-9.

SO I DON'T TALK ALOT

On this blog. I talk with my mouth enough in real life. The pictures here, for the most part, speak enough for my life and work. I don't fancy myself a writer, though it is all I wanted to be when I was a little child. But...this month was kind of wacky. A lot of things happened. Tube tops were made. Fantasy Quest choral pieces where sung. I discovered an ex-date's blog entries mostly still concerned me. Calendula-infused oils were created. Moon-unit band pieces were composed and recorded. Surprise Parties were organized and thrown. Vows were made. Discipline ramped up. An ex-love propositioned me after almost 2 years of love lost. Books were published. I saw Peaches walk on a sea of hands. My art was censored. For including an icon of a Yoruba deity on it, one I've been praying to and one that meant a lot to me. I did a lot of research about cultural appropriation in school. There's been a lot said and a lot read. It's something I think about often and something that can at times be a slippery fish in one's greasy hands. The different spiritual practices I subscribe to and ascribe to, while may be called into question because they are not in my genetics, or in my childhood upbringing, are tended to with care and reverence. The imagery that I derive inspiration from in my art comes from a myriad of sources, all of them researched and sampled/referenced for a reason. Putting one's self out there as an artist, means one may get criticized. But I never expected to get called a racist, or subtly accused of ignorance, for including imagery from other cultures and sources other than an American/white/Jewish one, whatever any of those mean any way. What do you think? When and where does our art cross the line? How do we exploit? Where do lines get drawn? What am I "allowed" to represent in my art and "who" decides the laws anyway? Why is policing still the standard practice, of the day?
SNOW PIECE

Think that snow is falling.
Think about snow is falling everywhere all the time.
When you talk with a person, think that snow is falling between you and on the person.
Stop conversing when you think the person is covered by snow.

FEMINIST SHIRTS ARE HERE FOR YOUR PURCHASE

Hi Friends, I'm selling my shirts at my favorite stores in Portland, OR. You can buy them at In Other Words, Nationale, and Sword and Fern. Please support these incredible, woman-owned businesses. The shirts read "You are Nothing Without Feminist Art". They are both a tongue in cheek flirty exclamation mark and a serious threat. An homage to Jenny Holzer and to other radical, fashion-forward artists and activists throughout history. They are printed on soft, stylish, organic cotton Alternative Apparel t-shirts and come in a variety of colors and styles. Made with love.
Let me know if you want to order one, I am putting an etsy store site up soon!

Photos from Last Splash

This was really fun. I got asked to design two swimwear looks for a fashion show sponsored by the Portland Mercury.Connie, Kirk, and the reat of the team did a great job.The suit I wore that the genius designer/artist Philip Iosca designed had a hundred pink hippos hand sewed onto a suit and felt warm and safe, like a teddy bear, to wear. The beautiful and talented Kaitlin Kennedy of Lost Lockets and my hot brother Seth modeled for me. Raja did make-up. The incredible Luxury Jones also rocked a piece. The collection that Heather Treadway showed was great too. I have never sewed or used a serger before a month ago and I have to say it was quite a challenge. But now I daydream about all the creations I want to make.Thank you
so much friends! You make it all happen.
